"If we truly want to move away from the excessive burning of artificially cheap fossil fuels that is powering the modern way of life, we'll need a positive vision of how and why people would benefit from such a change. The most basic case for a less materialistic, carbon-intensive lifestyle I can think of is that what gives our lives meaning and makes our spirits soar is usually not about how quickly we can get from Point A to B, but the human connections that happen along the way."
